INTERNAL MEMO: CASE FILE #025 | SUBJECT: ITZY – “MOTTO” (EP)

[ ARCHIVIST’S NOTE ] We are officially opening the file on ITZY’s brand-new era under their new company contract. The department was highly optimistic heading into this audit; the creative direction and concept photos for the Motto EP promised a genuine visual reboot. However, while the group tracks show a refreshing and much-needed shift in identity, the inclusion of five solo tracks severely compromises the cohesion of the project.

1. THE GROUP ARCHIVE: REFRESHING DYNAMICS

  • Motto (Title Track): A massive surprise for the department. ITZY delivers a track with an actual classic structure: proper verses, a pre-chorus, a standout chorus, and a legitimate bridge—a format the current industry layout rarely utilizes. It doesn't sound like any previous ITZY file, which is a major win. Leaning into a bright, colorful, and fun frequency is exactly what the registry needed after the trauma of the post-"Sneakers" era. (9/10)

  • Glitch: Unfortunately, the momentum halts here. The immediate data association goes straight to Kwon Eunbi’s superior “Glitch” leaving this track falling completely flat. The chorus fails to land, highlighting a recurring departmental note: ITZY has a very specific vocal tone matrix that only works on select production styles, and this techno-glitch frequency isn't one of them. (4.3/10)

  • you And I: A significant system recovery. This is a beautifully chill lane for the group. The vocal projection is highly satisfying, easily balancing out the spoken-word rap verses. Lia and Chaeryeong are the absolute stars of this file. It desperately needed a stronger build-up, but it remains a very nice addition to the folder. (7.4/10)

2. THE TOUR SOLO AUDIT: THE MEDIOCRE DANGER ZONE

The department always enters the JYP solo directory with caution, as the label historically defaults to safe, mediocre tour tracks. This five-track run unfortunately confirms our fears.

  • Pocket (Yeji Solo): The production textures mimic the framework of KISS OF LIFE’s “Get Loud” but the execution here is far less potent. Knowing Yeji has an elite file like “Air” in her archive makes this repetitive chorus feel incredibly ordinary. (7/10)

  • Asylum (Lia Solo): A total snooze-fest. The sonic blending of a "church girl" aesthetic with a generic pop-rock sound results in a complete flatline. At 3 minutes and 35 seconds, this track overstayed its welcome to an agonizing degree. (2/10 – IMMEDIATE SKIP)

  • LOOK (Ryujin Solo): This file is completely compromised by an empty chorus. The saving grace lies within the high-quality second verse and the transition into the pre-chorus. The outro offers solid performance energy for a tour setting, but as a studio recording, it’s mid-tier. (5.3/10)

  • Undefined (Chaeryeong Solo): THE SOLO STANDOUT. Chaeryeong remains criminally underrated for her vocal capability and stage presence. This track is fully realized in every single aspect—the vocals, the vibe, and the production are absolute perfection. Consider the department officially seated for her actual solo debut. (9/10)

  • Tangerine (Yuna Solo): A highly localized miss. The vocal delivery is far too nasally, and the hyper-bubblegum cute concept feels incredibly dated. The post-chorus fails to connect, and the production is entirely static—if you skip forward by 10-second increments, the track sounds identical from start to finish. (3.7/10 – SKIP)

[ THE DEPARTMENTAL VERDICT ]

ITZY’s new chapter has immense potential, but Motto suffers from a severe lack of editing. JYP should have kept this short, sweet, and cohesive by releasing it as a tight, two-to-three-song single album. Shoving uninspired tour solos into the main registry completely disrupts the flow of an otherwise strong title era.

[ TRACK-BY-TRACK SCORECARD ]

  • Motto: 9.0 / 10

  • Glitch: 4.3 / 10

  • you And I: 7.4 / 10

  • Pocket: 7.0 / 10

  • Asylum: 2.0 / 10

  • LOOK: 5.3 / 10

  • Undefined: 9.0 / 10

  • Tangerine: 3.7 / 10

[ FINAL REGISTRY SCORE: 5.9 / 10 ]

[ STATUS: COHESION FAILURE / TITLE TRACK ARCHIVED ]

"The title track is a triumph, and Chaeryeong’s solo is an absolute chef's kiss. However, the rest of the solo files are being moved to the 'Tour Visuals Only' directory to save the office speakers from a total layout crash."
