INTERNAL MEMO: CASE FILE #020 | SUBJECT: ZARA LARSSON – “MIDNIGHT SUN: GIRLS TRIP”
[ ARCHIVIST’S NOTE ] Zara Larsson is taking a massive risk with the release of Midnight Sun: Girls Trip. Re-opening a file that is already considered "strong and loved" by the audience is a high-stakes move. While the concept of a collaborative remix album sounds like a "gorg" idea on paper, the execution across these ten tracks is a mixed bag of technical glitches and rare flashes of brilliance. For the department, a remix needs to elevate or evolve the original—and most of these files just don't meet that benchmark.

1. THE "FALL FLAT" FILES: PINKPANTHERESS & KEHLANI
Midnight Sun (feat. PinkPantheress): We can hear Pink’s signature UK-Garage touch on the production, but compared to the original and the Muni Long/Stateside remixes, it falls flat. It’s a disappointing entry that fails to capture the high-velocity energy we expected from this pairing.
Blue Moon (feat. Kehlani): Kehlani brings her soft R&B influence, and while the remix fixes the "empty chorus" issue of the original, the rest of the track feels underwhelming. The vibe is changed, but the original registry remains superior.
2. THE SYSTEM CRASHES: "PRETTY UGLY" & "CRUSH"
Pretty Ugly (feat. JT & Margo XS): Disrespect to the original, mama. The cheerleader/marching vibe is lost in a "hot mess" of production. JT’s verse feels out of place, and Margo’s entrance doesn't land. It is, quite literally, "pretty ugly."
Crush (feat. Eli): This production makes zero sense sonically. The original bridge was a standout, but the remix bridge is boring. An immediate skip for the office.
3. THE DANCE FLOOR LOGS: SHAKIRA & EMILIA
Girls Girl (feat. Emilia): Finally, something listenable. The 2000s robotic sound effect and the production are a nice match. The outro after 2:30 is a highlight, though the track could have been edited down for a tighter flow.
Eurosummer (feat. Shakira): This is more of an "ass-shaking" track than a cinematic experience. While the Brazilian funk inspo is interesting and Shakira sounds great (it feels like her song), the reverb on Zara’s vocals was a miss. The original still paints a better scene in the registry.
4. THE SUCCESS STORIES: TYLA, MADISON, & ROBYN
Hot & Sexy (feat. Tyla): The original is a 10/10, so topping it was impossible. Zara was smart not to change too much. Tyla’s verse is decent, making this the best remix of the lot so far, even if it doesn't beat the original.
The Ambition (feat. Madison Beer & BAMBII): SYSTEM RECOVERY. This is one of the few tracks that is actually better than the original. Madison Beer absolutely ate Zara and BAMBII on this Brazilian funk production. Her vocals are top-tier.
Puss Puss (feat. Robyn): The department is giving a standing ovation. Closing the album with two Swedish pop icons was a masterstroke. Robyn added a magical touch that elevated the song far beyond its original version.
[ THE DEPARTMENTAL VERDICT ]
Midnight Sun: Girls Trip is a cute idea that suffered from inconsistent execution. When an album has a strong identity, remixes need to be elevated, not just "different." Aside from the entries with Madison Beer and Robyn, this project feels like a collection of missed opportunities.
[ EVALUATION METRICS ]
Collaboration Synergy: 4 / 10
Innovation vs. Original: 3 / 10
Standout Files: "Puss Puss" & "The Ambition"
Final Registry Score: 6.18 / 10
[ STATUS: ARCHIVED AS 'MIXED DATA' ]
"Directory updated. We're keeping the original 'Midnight Sun' on the main office speakers and moving most of these remixes to the 'Experimental Error' folder. At least we got the Madison and Robyn moments out of it."
